The site of the town of Canterbury, which has been occupied since pre-Roman times, was in ancient times the mouth of the River Stour, which broadened into an estuary extending to the Wantsum Channel, the strait that once separated the Isle of Thanet from the mainland. The cathedral may have had an organ as early as the 12th century, though the names of organists are only recorded from the early 15th century.
