Is he really asking Keith to blow him, or is he just playing off his own insecurities about working with a gay man? It’s a train of thought that David pursues with his choir buddy, Patrick. When Ruth finds an old bottle of Claire’s baby food, she realizes just how much of her life is in the past, and that she must work on making a future for herself.

When the Writers Guild of America put together a list of the best written TV series of all time, Six Feet Under was number 18, and the third HBO series on the list, behind only The Sopranos and The Wire. Of course, David does not want to be saved from himself. While the Fishers grew up in a house of faith, Brenda did not and we see that when Brenda explains how her viewpoint on life has been negative for as long as she can remember. Claire: “I wish that just once people wouldn’t act like the cliches they are.” Despite how hard he tries to get better, it’s never good enough for Ruth, who feels trapped by the whole situation. We watch as one of our most beloved characters get tortured and fears being killed.

(“I don’t have any other prospects,” George says, “and I don’t want any.”) There are touching poetic moments between them, like when Ruth expresses her advancing age in terms of seeing the stars moving faster than they used to—they “stream across the sky,” like in a movie, she says.

“Oh god, Nate,” she says, “I love you so much, it terrifies me.” Here we have two people, professing their love, yet separated by a chasm of fear. In David’s mind, this behavior only encourages those who might associate homosexuality with tawdry lust.

David chooses the latter interpretation, passive-aggressively subjecting Rico to a snippy monologue about the state of David’s pubic hair. Nate seems to see the women in his life as ideas that he can engage in to help him with what he needs in his life. When Claire invites her out for a meal and a trip to the museum, Ruth decides she can put the table back later. Who else did she meet?

She’s done away with her belief that everything happens for a reason, and she’s even scaring Claire away from the art world, after being the one to get Claire interested in art in the first place. Maybe you should just accept that, instead of trying to be something you’re not.” Nate, a devastated and confused widower with a young daughter named Maya, fights Lisa's family to give her the burial she told him she wanted: in the wilderness without any chemical or preservatives.

But it’s Olivier’s insanely self-centered desire for sex that helps Margaret get through the day. A lot of bad stuff happens to Claire, between the foot stealing, her first love and getting close to Billy. Sure, Nate is just a representation of what Claire wants to hear, but it’s incredibly likely that if Nate was still alive, he’d give her the exact same advice. She gives that same guy a second chance, then she finds out he’s OD’ed. Still, what Father Jack says is true, and although these two characters have to learn to keep some of the small things to themselves, trust is what helps hold them together. A Thing Too Awful to be Named, “Life’s Too Short” (Episode 1.09), 19. The Perks of Death, “The Room” (Episode 1.06), 16. Priest: “Amen.”. David asks Jack whether he should be happy with Keith. It’s like the tail of a comet. Nate: “Kurt Cobain died today.” We have Ruth’s birthday party, which gets off to a shaky start but gets better as it goes along (for most of the attendees, at least). Nate: “I guess we’ve got a lot to be thankful for.” And if there’s one thing Olivier isn’t lacking in and knows how to give off, it’s confidence. Writers from the show hailed from the likes of The West Wing and Seinfeld, and went on to participate in equally brilliant storytelling, on shows like The Affair, Transparent and Girls. What Cops Do, “The Foot” (Episode 1.03), 9. After comparing their work in class, Olivier calls Russell’s work “white elephant art,” then worries about Olivier’s assessment for days after. I’m a cop. Once David comes out to his family, the dynamic between him and his sister became one of the most fun things to watch on Six Feet Under. Sarah’s friend has died, and now that she’s experienced such a profound pain from the loss, her viewpoints begin to shift. She’s everywhere and that means she’s home!” David: “We’ve been clutching so desperately to the past, and for what?”

Why We Die, “Knock Knock” (Episode 1.13), 26.

Robert Lamar Giffin, 1955-2003.

True love to Keith, apparently means helping his boyfriend’s sister find the severed foot she stole. Nate: “Yeah, I’ll have a double dub – uh – uh – a – a Chubby – a double Chubby – a Chubby Chubby – a double double – a double chubby – a chubby chubby – a chub – I’ll have a doub – I’ll have a double Chubby cheeseburger. But it was always worth it.” It occurs to David that he is guilty of the very stereotyping he abhorred. But on the same day she joins the Fisher family, Brenda also engages in these meetings with the dead. But maybe she’s dead. The Letting Go, “Everyone’s Waiting” (Episode 5.12). There’s no God, no rules, no judgments, except for those you accept or create for yourself. Margaret Chenowith once again shows up, with her unique blend of inappropriate reveals and maternal wisdom. However, as the rest of the fifth season will show, it’s Nate and not Brenda who will ruin the happily-ever-after they’re going for. Well, guess what?

Carl Desmond Williman, 1948-2003. Keith isn’t happy working security since he’s no longer a cop and David rests far too much of his own happiness on Keith’s happiness. But after this fantastic moment at the dinner table, it seems like Nate’s view of his father might just be the most accurate. You can prop him up for a nap in the slumber room; but the fact remains, David, that the only father we’re ever gonna have is gone!

Even after being a member of two different churches, including one that was much more open to his sexuality, David realized that what you believe is far more important than where you believe. The show does a fantastic job of delving into the trauma brought on by loss, and each episode attests to the pervasiveness of death, no matter how much people try to deny their own mortality. Billy: “That’s the thing about Narcissus, it’s not that he’s so fucking in love with himself, because he isn’t at all. This is not to forgive Keith’s brusque behavior but rather to point out that in his own head, his “tough love” (for lack of a better term) makes perfect sense. Treat Yo Self, “Timing & Space” (Episode 3.07), 52. Brenda: “It would have been weird if I’d said it.” Nathaniel Sr.: “Pretty much. Margaret: “Wow. Claire’s sleepless night is spent in the company of artists.

David: “With all their genitalia” What a shock.”
