The drive up is easy and worth it. They really should have more security monitoring the roads and lookout areas to prevent this from happening.I still would categorize this as a must see, as the views are stunning, but the other visitors, hurt the experience. Parking is a bit interesting up there as well. There are local American Indians here selling souvenirs and I bought one.

Be careful of the drive up as it can get very windy and and the road is very narrow. There is ample parking at the top. The total drive time(to the look out point) from downtown Phoenix(Arcadia area) is approximately 35 minutes. Exploring the summit of South Mountain and Dobbins Lookout can take 5-30 minutes, depending on the interests of your kids. We took the Kiwanis trail which was easy-moderate and really saw some breathtaking scenery on the way up and down Southern Mountain. The road is quite windy and there's no shoulders so best to keep to the speed limit. A must visit in the Phoenix area!On 4th of July, we wanted to hike somewhere nice( as usual ) but did not want to be out in the 100+ degree heat for long. After a safety briefing and training, gear up and ride across rugged, rocky trails in the scenic Bradshaw Mountains, as well as cross the Agua Fria River.
