One of the main reasons the CFL has survived as long as it has is its salary structure, and in recent years, its implementation of a salary cap. That’s 175k (if my math is correct) a season. Besides these requirements, CFL contracts are not guaranteed in the case of a player being released or beyond the current season in the case of a football-related injury. Esks made 150K last year, even winning the GC and having to buy rings. Although not paid as full time employees, CFL officials are professionals who make judgment calls many times per game and their performance is continuously evaluated. The CFL, NFL, and USFL all had multiple owners to fund the leagues. For the 2019 season, the CFL Maximum Salary Expenditure Cap (SEC) is reportedly $5.70 million per team, increasing by $50,000 in each year of the three year collective agreement. 27k? Calgary with consistent 30k+ crowds is certainly profitable or they wouldn't of just sold for $6+ million. Once a standard player contract is signed, the player is entitled to the contract salary, no matter the roster he appears on (active, reserve, injured) except the suspended or disabled lists, until he is released. Therefore, it is not uncommon for players to share accommodations, either as a group of players sharing an apartment or other residence or boarding with a veteran player, although the practices in each CFL city will vary. The highest-paid player in the CFL is B.C.
I set up a spreadsheat in Excel that I update after every game.[/i]. The average CFL salary is around $CDN 97K not $54K. If you had a larger consumer market which is also based on population you’d see the salaries get higher for Canadian players, although with the leagues imposed limits and rules I think CFL pay would be in the mid to high six figures still, not in the millions like in the U.S.
For comparison, this was higher than the base NHL per diem (Article 19 of the NHL-NHLPA 2013 CBA [pg 128]) established in 2013. Now of course back then that was good pay but today that would equal $208,698 CAD and in the US dollar equals $159k.
Of course this is all hypothetical and since we can’t know for sure how much players are really making in the CFL. It’s not ‘best man per position’. I don’t think the league chooses not to pay NFL level salaries, the revenue from TV just isnt there and thats one of if not the main reason why the boys down south are making that kind of change. Initial reports stated a coach limit of 11, football operations staff limit of 17, and total expenditures capped at $2.738 million. I understand that since the only competition no longer exists (AAF) that they don’t have to match or beat salaries, now I’m not saying that’s whats happened here but it seems like they are going to reduce salaries drastically which I can foresee quite a few players walking away also! The players playing for cheap need to realize this is not a career league for them right now, or even the CFL, but a startup company and they need to realize the financial structural limits the XFL is under until the product grows. And that has never been their aim in any case. If the team goes to the divisional championship game, each player gets another $3,600 minimum. This increase will be reflected in the next TV contract which could triple each CFL teams league TV & Sponsorhip disbursment.
 Toronto ownership said earlier this year that they would show a small profit. “So if it took the CFL this long to pay players like that then think of how much further ahead the XFL is to the CFL.”. The allowance is reduced by $30 for travelling days where the team provides a meal and by $50 on departure or return days where the departure time occurs after or before 12:00 noon respectively. Player salaries do not include earnings outside of football or endorsement and appearance fees. A fan will argue all interpretations against a call/non-call in a neutral game because they can't survive their rival benefiting from the proper call. This requirement was negotiated away in the 2010 CBA in exchange for immediate and scheduled cap increases. The TV contracts don’t pay anything. Teams have the option to pay practice roster players the league minimum or higher. Starting in 2014, veteran players signing a CFL contract that is not their first are not required to have a team's option year added to the contract, therefore they may sign a single year contract.
You bet your sweet bippy!! The same article specifies that non-veteran players still on the roster (including injured lists and disabled list) at the end of training camp are entitled to a one-time $300 payment (as a roster bonus/housing allowance, I assume).
