Yardley, 29, made his MLB debut with San Diego in 2019. He’s been in their system since 2013 and long posted sharp numbers without getting a call to the big leagues. Outfielder Travis Jankowski has been optioned to Triple-A to create 25-man roster space. The Padres announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Eric Yardley. Jankowski has displayed some impressive speed and defense over 313 games with San Diego since the start of the 2015 campaign, though in the wake of his lost season, he could now be a non-tender candidate this winter. The former had a tough MLB debut showing in 2018 and was then diagnosed with a small UCL tear. All told, he allowed only 17 earned runs in 75 1/3 frames. Yardley’s low-velo offerings have proven effective over a longer run in the upper minors. The Seattle University grad went undrafted and pitched in the independent Pecos League out of college before signing on with the Padres as a minor league free agent. The future remains unclear for Nix and Yardley. On another subject, in hindsight, was management wrong in trading Reyes instead of Renfroe? As with many sidearm pitchers, Yardley isn’t going to blow anyone away with velocity. Yardley is an extreme groundball pitcher, easily topping the 60% grounder rate threshold in each of his professional seasons. His sinker checked in at an average of just 86.2 mph in the Majors this season. MLB.com beat writer AJ Cassavell points out that the Padres are in “dire need of bench help”–a fairly accurate portrait, considering that manager Andy Green has recently only had Hedges, Wil Myers, and rookie Ty France to turn to in search of late-inning at-bats. Jim Goulart of Brewerfan.net tweeted the news. But with Naylor, Mejia, Myers, Margot, and Renfroe all getting time in the OF, there was really no place for Jankowski. After being sidelined for much of the season due to a broken wrist, Jankowski appeared in just four games for the Padres before returning to the minors.
